The paper “REE-Extraction from Phosphate minerals” describes the principal hydrometallurgical processing for a variety of REE bearing phosphate minerals.
The most sought after and high valued heavy rare earth elements are present in the mineral xenotime. Other sources of rare earth elements are monazite and apatite. Different methods for the decomposition of phosphatic minerals to extract rare earth elements are discussed in the paper. Even apatite which is a key mineral for the production of phosphoric acid contains recoverable amounts of REE which can be extracted as high value by-products improving the sustainability of mining activity and the overall cost base.
